Energy Conservation Committee
The Crisis has some(or many?) pros on general society, besides the bad-bad effects on inter dependent economies worldwide. Anyway, not everything with that interests me, what interests me is an internal crisis of a Premier Indian Educational Institute - International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad.
For people outside IIIT-H, briefly, ours is an autonomous, self-funded University. No sort of regular funding from Government etc. We live with our fees and we survive and sustain with what we have. But when there is a lot to do(construction of buildings, labs. new infrastructure) with so little available(just the fee source), that's the time people really become desperate about savings!
Thats where our "Committee" came into the picture. Personally, I'm all happy with that! But, as a general neutral observer, I'm too curious about how are they going to do it? I mean, how are they going to save electricity from mis-usage?
Hmm.. do you remember the replacement of electric geysers with solar heaters? That's one EXCELLENT move! But, thinking at *room* level, what can be done? I don't have any idea. But I know that educating people is a bad one!
In the labs(not just research centers), I don't find those automatic motion sensors to switch the Air Conditioners off. I don't know if you have observed them, but they used to be there a while ago. Removing them is a BAD idea!
And asking people to not use their electrical appliances like electric cooker and stuff... I'm not for it! Look, the food at mess and 25 days of it is just aweful! Even if you provide us some very delicious and healthy food, this complaint would be the same.. oh wait, that doesn't mean we are getting it right now! So, there ought to be some trade off between you administration and we students. I hope for the two groups to live in a harmony, things like this should not be pressed too much :) I hope you get it right.
Those are my immediate reflections on that mail to all@iiit.
Hope the Committee does the things without creating (another)barricade between Administration and Students.

I somehow like the passionate rhetoric of yours. For one, "going green" (please read more about Green IT among others) is something that has been in the air for quite some time. Irrespective of what is the financial position of an Institute or a company, going green is considered as a part of efficient and effective use of your resources (especially energy). I'd think that things internal to the Institute are to be kept internal. There should be forums for the same on the LAN.

Hmm... that's the reason I cut short many things in second paragraph. Forum idea, I think, will work only if faculty is willing to participate in those discussions too.

Jus FYI.. Those motion sensors which were installed previously was an experiment by Building Science lab and they just tested it by fixing them in our labs for some days...
anyways, If they don't cost
anyways, If they don't cost too much, having them (atleast)in labs does so much good.
